庄子在桥上与著名的哲学家惠施一起散步。他看见鱼在水中自由自在地游来游去，便对身边的惠施说：“这是鱼的乐趣啊！”
惠施问庄子：“你不是鱼，你怎么知道鱼是快乐的呢？”
庄子说：“那么，你不是我，你怎么知道我不了解鱼的乐趣呢？”
两个人你一言我一语互不相让，惠施道：“我不是你，当然不知道你的感觉。你本来就不是鱼，你肯定也不会知道鱼的感觉。”
庄子到底是做学问的人，十分善于总结问题在哪儿。他认为两人争论的焦点是，你问我怎么知道鱼儿的快乐，这是你承认我了解鱼的乐趣以后才会提出的问题。于是他告诉惠施：
　　“那是因为我在桥上的心情很高兴，所以我就认为鱼儿在水中也是很快乐的。”
