由 introduces the person or agent responsible for an action, often in formal written Chinese. In entertainment contexts, it commonly means “played by” or “portrayed by”.
"剧中，由张凌赫饰演的武将谢征，身披玄甲、头戴雉鸡翎，本该是叱咤沙场的铁血男儿，却因妆容过于白皙精致，被网友戏谑为“粉底液将军”。"
本该 means “originally should have” or “was supposed to”. When paired with 却, it highlights a strong contrast between expectation and reality.

This classic concessive pattern shows that even though one fact is true, another contrasting fact still stands. In formal writing, 虽然 may sometimes be omitted when the meaning is clear, but the contrast remains.
